Newspaper puts business cards in the hands of 20,000 people

Imagine handing your business card to more than 20,000 people!  That's what The Courier News in Clinton, Tenn., helped local business executives do in January.

Allen Handley, publisher, admits the paper stole this idea from a sister paper.

The Courier News Business Card Directory sold business card-size blocks of space – as singles, doubles, triples and premium positions – by category.

A basic business card ad (in color) was priced at $100.  Prime positions sold for $595 (back cover) or $495 (inside front or inside back cover).

The front cover was not a premium position.  As an enticement to be in the publication, the paper held a drawing from among all advertisers for the coveted cover position.

Companies had to purchase two placements in order to be included in the directory.  All sales commissions were taken out on the first insertion, giving the paper pure profit with the second placement.

The directory was printed by an outside source in Indianapolis and was distributed in-paper.  Copies also were given to the advertisers to distribute.
